SKF South Africa celebrates 112 years of partnership and sustainability in rotating asset optimisation

SKF South Africa: 112 years of driving rotational asset optimisation

Commemorating 112 years of innovation, premium quality products, cutting-edge technologies and enduring partnerships, SKF South Africa in 2026 enters a defining chapter, one that underscores its unwavering commitment to shaping the future of industry through strategic rotating asset optimisation.

SKF was established in 1914 by Swedish holding company SKF AB as the first subsidiary on the African continent – then known as SKEFKO (South Africa) Ball Bearing Company Limited, based in Pritchard Street, Johannesburg. Through its ability to remain dynamic, SKF South Africa has progressed from a bearings and engineering services supplier into a pioneer of innovative products and technologies that seamlessly integrate with the digital era, keeping pace with the rigorous demands of modern industry.

Modern industry demands smarter strategies that boost production while reducing operational costs to secure long‑term sustainability. In this pursuit, machine efficiency and reliability emerge as true game‑changers, redefining how companies achieve equilibrium between performance and cost. SKF South Africa delivers integrated solutions that combine innovative design, superior products, advanced technologies, connected lubrication systems, state‑of‑the‑art condition monitoring, data analytics and machine learning. Backed by skilled engineering expertise, these solutions extend mean time between failures (MTBF), enhance machine longevity and reduce energy consumption. As an OEM supplier of premium bearings, seals, power transmission, lubrication, condition monitoring and maintenance solutions, underpinned by mechanical engineering and remanufacturing expertise, SKF South Africa holds a competitive edge across nearly 40 sectors, from mining and renewable energy to rail, medical, food & beverage and paper. In doing so, SKF empowers customers to meet rising production demands, reduce costs and advance their sustainability goals.

SKF South Africa considers its valued customers and the long‑term relationships built with them as central to the company’s success. SKF invests deeply in these partnerships, delivering ever more advanced and energy‑efficient solutions that reinforce its strong narrative of optimising the performance, life, reliability and efficiency of customers’ rotating assets. Not only defined by the quality of its products and services, SKF’s core values – Collaboration, Courage, Curiosity and Care – guide employees’ decision‑making and ensure that every customer interaction is shaped by trust, collaboration and shared achievement.

SKF South Africa embraces the ethos of empowering women in engineering and is a passionate advocate for greater gender diversity across the field. This commitment took shape in 2016 with the establishment of the Golelo Trust, created to advance the education and economic development of Black women in South Africa. Through educational bursaries supporting the study of mechanical engineering at tertiary level, the Trust continues to open doors for future engineers and strengthen the pipeline of diverse talent that will drive the industry forward. Equally, SKF values its employees, recognising that their expertise, dedication and teamwork are the foundation of the company’s success.

SKF South Africa fighting friction to move the world forward

Since appointing its first distributor in 1970, SKF’s strategic distributor network has been pivotal to growth and success, expanding into a footprint of authorised independent industrial distributors – complemented by lubrication and agricultural specialists – across South Africa and neighbouring countries. These enduring partnerships and extensive reach deliver engineering expertise, products and service solutions directly to customers’ doorsteps.

SKF South Africa’s 112‑year journey has borne witness to landmark innovations and transformative milestones that have reshaped the trajectory of industry. Sustainability remains a core focus for SKF South Africa, where reducing, reusing and recycling are embedded as key principles of its operations. Central to this commitment is the specialist Bearing Remanufacturing facility, established in 2008, which extends the life of high‑value bearings through second, third and even fourth use. Every remanufactured bearing and unit conforms to the same stringent quality specifications as new SKF products, underscoring the company’s role as a sustainability leader in the region. By reusing rather than replacing, customers achieve reduced costs and shorter lead times while actively contributing to a greener planet. Beyond lowering material consumption, SKF South Africa ensures that bearings not eligible for remanufacture are recycled, effectively closing the loop and reinforcing sustainability as a defining principle of its operations.

To accommodate future growth and innovation, SKF relocated its Johannesburg head office in 2020 to larger, purpose‑built premises in the prominent Jet Park industrial area. The building embodies SKF’s global net‑zero ambition: The facility’s 383 kWp solar installation generates around 30% more than the company’s average electricity demand, enabling the warehouse, workshops, offices and logistics operations to run almost entirely off‑grid between working hours (08h30 and 16h30). As a grid‑tied system, instead of battery storage, surplus energy is fed back into the municipal grid free of charge, ensuring that every kilowatt contributes to a more sustainable future.

SKF’s Circular Solutions Centre, launched in 2023 and formerly known as the SKF Solutions Factory, was established to provide industry with a dedicated hub for sustainability‑driven innovation and to address the growing need for resource efficiency, reduced environmental impact and extended asset lifecycles. The Centre brings together an integrated suite of SKF services under one roof, housing bearing remanufacturing, project engineering, seal manufacturing, RecondOil technology and a range of onsite services, all designed to help customers lower waste, optimise performance and unlock long‑term value. By consolidating these capabilities, SKF ensures that sustainability is not an add‑on, but a core part of how industry operates. SKF South Africa is defined not only by the quality of its products and services but also by the principles it upholds – empowerment, high ethics, diversity and inclusion and teamwork. Achieving Level 2 BBBEE status in 2026 illustrates SKF’s commitment to supporting the local economy and driving meaningful transformation. With a proven reputation for excellence, the company keeps in step with market trends, continually honing its technologies, services, expertise and capabilities to drive rotational asset optimisation, future‑proof customer operations, secure competitive edge and ultimately advance business sustainability. SKF South Africa looks confidently to the future and stands ready to embrace industrial opportunities for the next 112 years.
