Liebherr-Ghana and Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF) have awarded scholarships to local students as part of their shared Excellence Scholarship programme.
In October, three scholarships were awarded to undergraduate students from Newmont’s host communities as part of Liebherr-Ghana and NADeF’s Excellence Scholarship programme. Each scholarship, worth GH¢15,000 (~€1,000), supports students pursuing higher education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), reinforcing both organisations’ commitment to education and community development.
‘Engagement with the communities where we live and operate is a key pillar of Liebherr-Ghana’s operations,’ says Etienne Dupuy, managing director of Liebherr-Ghana. ‘Through our partnership with NADeF with the Excellence Scholarship programme, we are empowering local talent through access to education – something we believe is essential to building resilient communities.’
Launched in 2013, the Excellence Scholarship programme has awarded 18 scholarships to date. Many of the beneficiaries have returned to contribute to local industries, including mining, after completing their studies.
Liebherr has partnered with Newmont’s Ahafo gold mine since 2013, when the first of three Liebherr R 9400 excavators was commissioned.
‘Our partnership with Newmont and NADeF goes beyond mining equipment and support,’ adds Dupuy. ‘It’s our shared values of investing in people and communities that make this a unique and prosperous collaboration. Together with Newmont, we look forward to continued success – both in mining operations and in shaping the next generation of STEM leaders in Ghana.’
