Optimising dewatering performance in deep-level mining operations

The PAC SH high head pump is built to handle high concentrations of solids and abrasive materials, making it well suited to demanding site conditions.

IPR Unveils High-Lift Atlas Copco PAC SH Pump for Deep Mining Dewatering

Integrated Pump Rental (IPR) has introduced the Atlas Copco PAC SH self-priming centrifugal single-stage pump range, setting a new benchmark for high-performance dewatering at extreme mining depths. With a maximum head of 235 metres and flow rate of 2 000 m³, the PAC SH stands as the largest and most powerful addition to IPR’s extensive dewatering portfolio.

Meeting the Challenge of Deep Pit Dewatering

As global mineral demand accelerates, opencast mines are extending deeper to access remaining ore bodies. These operations often face significant groundwater ingress, posing serious risks such as flooding, equipment damage and safety hazards. Effective, reliable dewatering is now more crucial than ever.

According to Steve du Toit, Sales Manager at IPR, many mines have traditionally relied on multi-stage centrifugal systems to pump water from extreme depths. However, these systems become increasingly complex as mining goes deeper, requiring additional pumps, piping, and infrastructure that elevate both costs and maintenance requirements.

The PAC SH pump’s lower fuel consumption and longer service intervals help reduce overall operating costs.

Simplifying Dewatering at Extreme Depths

“The PAC SH provides a simpler and more efficient solution,” Du Toit explains. “Thanks to its exceptional lift capability, it can pump directly from deeper levels of the pit without multiple stages. This reduces installation complexity, limits equipment requirements, and cuts down on maintenance.”

Du Toit notes that the PAC SH’s advanced design delivers higher lift and efficiency than conventional multi-stage systems typically used for deep pit dewatering. “With fewer pumps needed and a more straightforward setup, mines benefit from consistent performance and improved reliability, even under demanding conditions.”

A Complete Suite for Every Stage of Pit Development

The new PAC SH complements IPR’s existing VAR, PAS and PAC ranges, giving mining operations access to a comprehensive suite of dewatering solutions for every phase of development, from initial excavation to ultra-deep pit operations.

“With the extended PAC range,” Du Toit concludes, “mines can now match the right pump to each stage of pit development. This flexibility ensures optimal efficiency and gives teams the confidence that the ideal solution is always at hand.”
