Global testing, inspection and certification leader SGS will commission a new geochemistry sample preparation unit in Saudi Arabia this October, with a full analytical laboratory scheduled to follow later in the month.

The development represents a significant step in supporting the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy, which places mining at the center of national economic diversification. By establishing local geochemistry services, SGS will enable mining and exploration companies to reduce reliance on overseas facilities, shorten turnaround times, and improve operational efficiency.

Strategic Expansion for the Mining Sector

The new facility in Jeddah will provide a full suite of sample management services, including collection, handling, crushing, pulverizing, and retention. These capabilities will underpin accurate analysis of rocks, ores, sediments, and heavy mineral samples, ensuring reliable data for exploration and development projects.

Lawrence Ng, Global Vice President of Geochemistry at SGS, highlighted the strategic importance of the investment:

“The establishment of local geochemistry capabilities positions SGS at the forefront of Saudi Arabia’s mining transformation. As exploration intensifies, we are enabling faster market access, mitigating operational risks, and supporting the long-term growth of the sector across the Middle East.”

Partnership and Local Capacity Building

SGS is collaborating with Golden Compass, a regional specialist in mining operations, drilling, and exploration consultancy. The partnership is designed to integrate SGS’s global laboratory expertise with local knowledge, while also contributing to workforce development through the training of Saudi personnel.

By mid-October, SGS expects the full analytical laboratory to be operational. The laboratory will offer a comprehensive range of geochemical assays covering precious metals, base metals, and multi-element packages, conducted under SGS’s internationally recognized quality standards.

Longstanding Presence in Saudi Arabia

SGS has maintained operations in the Kingdom since 1980 and currently operates offices in Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Jubail, Ras Tanura, Yanbu, and Rabigh. Globally, the company manages more than 2,500 laboratories and facilities across 115 countries, employing approximately 99,500 people.
