In a move that signals both confidence in Botswana’s mining future and Sandvik’s growing dominance in the Southern African mining landscape, the Swedish equipment manufacturer has secured a USD 41 million order from global mining contractor JCHX Mining Management Co., Ltd. for the Khoemacau Copper Mine (KCM).
The deal, booked in the third quarter of 2025, includes an extensive fleet of underground loaders, haul trucks, and drills. But what sets it apart is the integration of Sandvik’s digital monitoring and automation technologies, including its Remote Monitoring Service, designed to improve operational safety, efficiency, and equipment longevity. Deliveries are set to begin in late 2025 and extend through the first half of 2026.

Located in Botswana’s Kalahari Copper Belt, Khoemacau is not just another mine—it’s the country’s flagship copper project. With expansion underway, the mine is quickly becoming one of Africa’s most significant copper producers, a development that aligns with the global surge in copper demand driven by electrification, renewable energy, and the rise of electric vehicles.
“We are proud to support JCHX in delivering safe and productive operations at Khoemacau Copper Mine, and look forward to supplying our high-performance equipment and advanced underground solutions,” said Mats Eriksson, President of Sandvik Mining.
A Strategic Play in Botswana’s Mining Evolution
For Botswana, long known as a diamond powerhouse, the Khoemacau project represents an economic pivot—broadening the nation’s mining portfolio at a time when global copper is more valuable than ever. By choosing Sandvik, JCHX and KCM are betting on proven technology and long-term reliability to meet ambitious production goals.
For Sandvik, the order strengthens its position not only in Botswana but across Southern Africa, where the company already has deep ties with South Africa’s mining industry. The inclusion of digital monitoring solutions underscores Sandvik’s role as more than just a supplier of machinery—it is becoming a technology partner, driving mines toward automation, digitization, and sustainability.
Sandvik’s Regional Momentum
Industry insiders note that Southern Africa is quickly becoming a focal point for mining technology providers. Mines across the region are under pressure to boost productivity while adhering to tighter environmental, safety, and efficiency standards. With its hybrid of heavy machinery and cutting-edge digital services, Sandvik is well positioned to dominate this transformation.
The partnership with JCHX also signals Sandvik’s growing appeal to global mining contractors operating in Africa. As more international players flock to the copper-rich Kalahari belt, technology suppliers with proven track records—like Sandvik—are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the next chapter of African mining.
Beyond Diamonds: Botswana’s Copper Future
The Khoemacau Copper Mine is fast emerging as Botswana’s flagship non-diamond mining operation. Its success could cement the country’s reputation as a regional copper hub and attract new waves of investment. For Sandvik, being at the center of this expansion ensures that its equipment and technology will not just power production but also help define the future of mining in Botswana and the wider Southern African region.
