Empowering Women in Logistics

Empowering Women in Logistics

Veli’s vision is to expand Thamco beyond transport into warehousing and distribution. To help realise this ambition, BIL has funded two 8-ton tautliner trucks and a single-cab bakkie, all fully Hazchem compliant for the safe transportation of hazardous goods.

As Women’s Month draws to a close, Bidvest International Logistics (BIL) reaffirms its commitment to empowering women in logistics. The company’s Overland Logistics division is proud to announce its support for Thamco, a 100% Black female-owned logistics business founded by entrepreneur Veli Gwamanda, who brings five years of experience in the transport sector.

Veli’s vision is to expand Thamco beyond transport into warehousing and distribution. To help realise this ambition, BIL has funded two 8-ton tautliner trucks and a single-cab bakkie, all fully Hazchem compliant for the safe transportation of hazardous goods.
In addition to providing vehicles, BIL’s support includes operational guidance, compliance assistance, finance and legal advice, driver engagement strategies, and access to subject matter experts across its business network.

Marcus Ellappan, Director: Overland Logistics at BIL, said, “As a responsible contributor to South Africa’s business and economic growth, we are proud to launch another enterprise development initiative that fosters sustainable growth. Supporting a female entrepreneur in a traditionally male-dominated industry is both exciting and necessary for real economic transformation.”

Veli Gwamanda, Founder of Thamco, added, “This support from BIL is a game-changer. It allows me to take Thamco to the next level – to move from being just a transport provider to becoming a fully integrated logistics partner. As a Black woman in a male-dominated industry, I know how important it is to have the right backing. BIL’s belief in my vision gives me the confidence and tools to build a legacy business that uplifts others too.”

This initiative forms part of BIL’s broader commitment to building stronger communities and creating meaningful opportunities for emerging businesses.

Another success story that highlights the lasting impact of enterprise development is BIL’s partnership with Namisile Truck Washing Services (NTW). Launched in 2015 under an ED programme, NTW initially operated from BIL’s Umbilo site. Even after the agreement ended, the company thrived, evolving into a sustainable and independent business. Today, NTW has expanded its offering from truck washing to vehicle cleaning and eco-friendly wash solutions, continuing as a trusted service provider to BIL.
These stories demonstrate how the proper support, delivered at the right time, can empower businesses to achieve long-term success.
