Angola’s First Major Copper Mine Kicks Off Production at Tetelo

Angola has taken a major step toward diversifying its resource-driven economy with the launch of its first large-scale copper mine, the Tetelo Mine, set to begin production this week.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Diamantino Azevedo confirmed the development during a mining conference in Luanda, describing it as a milestone in the country’s efforts to expand into the clean energy minerals market.

A $250 Million Boost to Angola’s Mining Sector

The $250 million Tetelo project, owned by China’s Shining Star Icarus, is projected to produce 25,000 metric tons of copper concentrate annually during its first two years. The mine will start as an open-pit operation, transitioning to underground mining in the second half of 2026.

“I am honoured to announce the inauguration of the Tetelo mine, which will take place in a few days,” Azevedo told delegates. “This event marks the start of production at the first underground mine for this very important metal.”

Driving Angola’s Clean Energy Ambitions

Angola’s move into copper production reflects a strategic push to diversify beyond oil and strengthen its position in the global energy transition. Copper is a critical component in renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and power infrastructure — all vital for a lower-carbon future.

Alongside copper, Angola has been exploring other battery and clean energy minerals, including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, to attract foreign investment and build a more resilient economy.

Rising Global Interest in Angola’s Copper Potential

Angola’s copper potential has begun drawing attention from global mining giants. Ivanhoe Mines and Anglo American are already advancing exploration projects in the country. Ivanhoe recently made headlines by shipping its first copper through Angola’s railway system, highlighting the growing role of the southern African nation in regional mineral trade.

With Tetelo’s production launch, Angola is positioning itself as an emerging copper hub in Africa, offering new opportunities for investors eyeing the clean energy transition.
