The milestone comes as South Africa faces significant infrastructure demands across water, energy, transport and urban development. For GIBB Group, the anniversary is therefore not simply a celebration of longevity, but an opportunity to reflect on what seven decades of infrastructure delivery have enabled and reaffirm its commitment to the challenges that remain.
GIBB Group CEO Vishaal Lutchman says reaching 70 years is a proud moment for the business.

GIBB’s history is one of continual evolution, responding to the changing needs of clients, industries and the continent it serves.
From its beginnings as Hill Kaplan & Partners in 1956, GIBB has grown through transformation, strategic partnerships and diversification into a proudly South African, 100% employee-owned business with capabilities extending well beyond its traditional engineering roots.
Lutchman says this evolution has changed the role GIBB Group is able to play alongside clients and partners.
“We are no longer only an engineering consultancy. Across the Group, we bring together engineering, architecture and investment capability to support infrastructure from planning and project development through to design, delivery and, in selected areas, investment. This allows us to work as a long-term strategic partner, bringing together the technical, commercial and delivery capability needed to navigate complexity and create sustainable value.”
Through seven decades, the clearest measure of GIBB Group’s contribution has not simply been the scale of the projects it has worked on, but what those projects have enabled.
Across South Africa and the African continent, the company’s work has helped expand access to clean water, connect communities through transport networks, strengthen energy systems, develop sustainable cities and unlock economic opportunity.
Its track record includes the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme and major water-security programmes including the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and Umkhomazi Water Project, alongside architecture and urban-development projects delivered through SVA International.
The Group’s move into infrastructure investment also reflects its long-term commitment to the markets it serves. Through GIBB Crede, GIBB can participate not only as an adviser or technical partner, but as a co-developer and investor in infrastructure projects.
Lutchman says infrastructure should ultimately be understood through the opportunities it creates.
“A transport network is about more than kilometres of road or rail. It connects people to jobs and businesses to markets. Water infrastructure supports communities and future growth, while energy infrastructure supports economic activity and resilience. Technical excellence matters, but its purpose is to create lasting value for people and economies.”
Partnership has remained central to GIBB’s journey. The Group works alongside government, private-sector clients, developers, financiers, operators, professional partners and communities, recognising that complex infrastructure challenges require collaboration.
The anniversary also provides an opportunity to recognise generations of employees who have built and carried GIBB’s expertise forward.
“Our heritage lives in our people,” says Lutchman. “It is carried in the knowledge passed between generations, in relationships built over decades and in the commitment of our teams to continue learning, adapting and finding better ways to serve our clients.”
While GIBB celebrates everything that has brought it to this milestone, its focus remains firmly on the future.
